We are a team of volunteers from different in awe. With our base in Sweden, we are from all over the world—Sweden, Germany, the United States, Ukraine and other places—united by a single cause: bringing humanitarian aid to those who need it most on the frontlines of Ukraine.
The damage of the war is daunting, but we refuse to be deterred.
Everything started when Levan was in Kyiv to interview the president of Ukraine, Mr Zelensky, for his upcoming documentary two days before the invasion. Still, the interview got cancelled, and so did his flight tickets to Stockholm. Levan found himself alone in Ukraine but managed to leave the country on the 26th of February with the help of his Ukrainian friend and VFX (film effects) artist "Vova" Volodymir Kolisnyk, whom Levan won an MTV Music Video Award in the year 2018.
Back home, after a short period of reorganization in Sweden, Levan returned to the Ukrainian border with his own vehicle, filled with the first shipment of goods for his friend Vova as he had been volunteering for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, attempting to fulfil their medical needs and requirements.
After several solo trips to the Ukrainian border, Fellow filmmakers from New York, Alex Topaler and Dan Shapiro joined Levan as well. The team created the non-profit civil initiative "Ukraine Express" German paramedic Norbert Linthertal who has been one of the first donators to Ukraine Express, also joined the team, and later the Swedish journalist and writer Margit Richert who is based in Kyiv and has written a book about Ukraine during the invasion.
Ukraine Express has delivered a total of 72 tons of food, 12 to 13 tons of hospital and medical equipment, vehicles and emergency tools - all sent directly to regiments throughout the country. Right now, the team is focusing on the project: "Operation Bakhmut"
